One Of The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Yes, this is an unusual suggestion. I really am telling you to go to a steakhouse. Read why….

Even though I was finally getting the chance to dine for lunch at one of Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants, Delmonico Steakhouse in Las Vegas, I was quite skeptical of what I was actually going to eat.

Interesting story; I had already crazily researched the vegetarian options for dinner at his original New Orleans Delmonico restaurant when I was there over Thanksgiving with my family. While my mom, dad and brother are also vegetarian, they were not necessarily down to head to a steakhouse for dinner. Since I was pretty sure I was going to get vetoed on the dinner plans, I had the forethought to create a back-up agenda and sneakily suggest we just have dessert at Delmonico to celebrate my mom’s birthday. And of course being the researcher I am, I already knew at least one dessert I would be ordering for the table…the highly recommended banana cream pie. Sadly, that dream was squashed quickly when I got a unanimous “no” on heading to Delmonico, even if just for dessert. Sad Face.

So, when I happened to be walking through the Shops at the Palazzo in Las Vegas on my way to the convention center for a work conference, I was super excited when I saw Delmonico Steakhouse. I figured this was my chance to finally eat at this restaurant and it was a major score because I was on an expense budget through my company. I was able to convince my co-worker to come with me to lunch since we both had the same time off from our conference duties (which was to help manage the booth at the conference, but sounds so much better when you refer to it as being a “booth babe”). I didn’t have time to do any research on the Vegas location (since sometimes menus can vary by location), so this was a random, amazing find. Ironically, I was taking my chances on Emeril’s known meaty culinary talents to carry me through lunch, hoping not to have to resort to eating a boring salad.

We started with the truffle parmesan potato chips, which when we finally got them (the service was really slow) were simply delicious. I was trying really hard to not gorge on the homemade potato chips, but that damn truffle and parmesan combination makes them irresistible! I was waiting to hold out for my grilled cheese and heirloom tomato soup, which of course I confirmed were both vegetarian prior to ordering.

Finally when my lunch arrived, I was impressed with how good it looked. This was not your typical grilled cheese and tomato soup. The cheese in the sandwich was actually a very tasty and fluffy homemade ricotta cheese with finely chopped local basil in it. The white bread was a nice thickness and was impressively toasted to perfection; crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  What made this grilled cheese the best I have ever had was that it was not the standard greasy grilled cheese; where when you take one bite and a bunch of grease oozes out the other end from the cheese or overly buttered bread. No, this was superior excellence on a plate and Chef Emeril got it more than right!

To complement the sandwich was a light heirloom tomato puree. It was very simple with little added to it so you really could taste the zestiness of the tomatoes. Honestly, this was hands-down one of the BEST grilled cheese and tomato soups I have ever had. If you are vegetarian and find yourself near a Delmonico in New Orleans or Las Vegas, you NEED to get this grilled cheese.  And if you are a die-hard meat-eater, skip the steak and go veggie for one meal (or at least get this as an appetizer)! I promise you won’t regret it.

Oh, and on a recent trip back to Vegas, I finally had the chance to get that banana cream pie (which is covered in caramel sauce, chocolate shavings and lots of whipped cream). It is also a must. And HUGE, so plan to share! Or not…..

Sheetal Bhagat- MasterChef

Sheetal Bhagat MasterChef Finalist

My dear friend Sheetal is not only a talented singer, amazing person and absolutely beautiful….she is also an awesome cook (yes, some people really do have it all). She was a finalist on the first season of Fox’s reality cooking competition MasterChef, featuring world renown chefs Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot. I always knew Sheetal was a great cook, but after making it so far into a competition that thousands from around the US auditioned for, she was now totally legit! Continue reading

Follow My Stomach And Not My Head

It was the last of five days in Las Vegas for work. I probably had consumed about 50,000 extra calories at this point and was quite honestly reaching my max on heavy food items. But, come on, I was on an expense budget and in the city of sin, why think about being healthy now? Why not have one last fantastic meal??? No worries, I followed my stomach and not my head and went for it.

Because of my obsession with Bravo’s popular hit, TopChef, I was well aware that one of the world’s most renown chef’s, Thomas Keller, had a restaurant in Las Vegas. Since being a vegetarian and French food don’t usually go hand in hand, the only meal it really works for is breakfast. And that is exactly what I reserved as my last meal in Vegas before departing.

Bouchon at The Venetian, Las Vegas

My very close friend Anuja moved to Las Vegas a few years back and she was so awesome to take a half day off work to hang out with me before I headed to the airport. How perfect to have breakfast with a great friend at a highly respected restaurant? She came and met me at the Wynn (where I was staying) and we headed over to The Venetian to check out Bouchon Bistro.

Some of my co-workers who had already departed went to the quick cafe version of the restaurant and mentioned that the pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) were to die for. Hello, no brainer!!!!

After Anuja and I reviewed the menu, we found what was the perfect option for us to split (since we kind of wanted to try a bunch of things rather than get our own meal). The Breakfast Américaine (two eggs any syle served with bacon, country sausage, pommes frites & toasted brioche served with your choice of a breakfast pastry, fresh juice & Bouchon blend coffee) looked ideal. Now obviously we asked to switch out the bacon and country sausage and our waiter was happy to accommodate our request. We were able to get the creamed spinach and a side of fruit instead. And do I really need to spell out what we chose as our breakfast pastry???

Let’s start with the chocolate croissant. This divine creation took me back to the streets of Paris. It was a perfectly flaky croissant that was slightly crisp on the oustide and soft and buttery on the inside. The chocolate in the center was so flavorful and slightly melty so that it was a part of each bite. It really could not have been more amazing or indulgent. I was trying to savor each bite and not just inhale it in three bites. “Trying” is the operative word in that sentence.

I have to admit I was actually blown away by the rest of the breakfast. I didn’t really have any expectations, since my one-track mind was focused on the croissant. But everything from the freshly squeezed orange juice to the tasty, creamy spinach to the amazing rosemary potatoes with grilled onions were fantastic. Even the scrambled eggs were light and fluffy and something that just can’t ever be replicated at home (I’m not much of an egg person, but why can you never recreate eggs the way they do in restaurants?) The brioche toast was even really good and better than just your average toast you get anywhere else.

While we were both in awe of how magnificent this breakfast turned out to be, we were also wondering how one person could put all that food away on their own?? We just split that breakfast and were stuffed!!!!! It really was the most ideal breakfast because we got to try many of the amazing items Thomas Keller created. Also, I was highly impressed with the service. They really had great attention to detail and I just loved the ambience of the restaurant. I really did feel like I was at a true French bistro back in France. It is probably a good thing that Bouchon is far away from me because I could see going out of my way to get those croissants….
