French Macarons? Yes, Please!

I think it goes without saying, but just to be sure, I’ll say it again. All French macarons are not created equal. Trust me, I’ve tried them. A lot of them. All over the world as a matter of fact (afternoon tea at a 5-star hotel in Bangkok, a bakery in the Ferry Building in San Francisco, macaron only shops in NYC, just to name a few).

I never really was a macaron snob until my sister-in-law told me to try the famous ones from Laduree of Paris. Once I tried these absolutely perfect, light, airy, flavorful and delicious little gems from Laduree, I was hooked and the bar was set high. Like so high, that it has been really hard to find any sort of comparison or competition. I have tried a lot of macarons and after trying the ones from Laduree, I’ve found most macarons to be either too dry, too chewy, having no flavor, too dense and the list goes on. Yes, I realize that I sound maybe a little picky (ok, very picky) about these little treats, but why would you waste perfectly good money and calories on something that is not good? And, macarons don’t come cheap as most are upwards of $2.50 each. So, let me save you some time and hard-earned cash and tell you three of my top favorites I’ve come across during my food and travel adventures.

Laduree– Well, of course this was going to be on the list since I just went on and on raving about them! Originally only available in Paris, Laduree’s fame made its way to the US to NYC and was an instant hit on the Upper East Side. Such a hit, that a second NYC location in SoHo was built and now more recently, a Miami, Florida location has opened (you know I am waiting with bated breath for the announcement of a Chicago location). The first time I ever tried Laduree, I tried three different flavors and I remember thinking they were all really good, but there was one in particular that really blew me away. It was the salted caramel macaron and I still think about it to this day. Thank goodness for the NYC Laduree locations since I can’t make it to Paris as frequently as I make it to NYC (sad, but not so sad, cause I really do love NYC). Trust me, if you find yourself at Laduree, or know of anyone near one (there are also locations in other countries too), make sure you get the salted caramel one. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Pierrot Gourmet at The Peninsula Hotel Chicago– If you read my blog, then hopefully you already read the write-up I did on the absolutely fantastic summer soiree I attended at The Peninsula Hotel a few months ago. I mean, I could still go on and on about what an unbelievable party The Peninsula can throw, but since we are talking macarons here, I will stick to the topic at hand. At the party that evening, I had the chance to sample many different flavors of macarons that are served at the restaurant Pierrot Gourmet at The Peninsula Chicago. I loved some of the unique flavors, like cherry pistachio, but the one that stole my heart was the s’mores macaron. Delicate and flavorful with a marshmallow and rich chocolate ganache center, I just can’t get enough of this treat. It is a bit of a problem that I live right around the corner from Pierrot Gourmet and can just zoom in and out to fulfill my s’mores macaron craving (which is quite frequent as a matter of fact). Dangerous I tell you….very dangerous!

Woops! Bakeshop– With locations in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I was first introduced to these macarons last year at my cousin’s engagement party. From the first bite, I could tell these were legit macarons because not only did they have tons of flavor, they were not at all dry (I really hate dry macarons). I recently had the chance to try more Woops! macarons and loved tasting many of the fun flavors. I was also pretty shocked at what my favorite flavor was. Normally I tend to love the chocolate or pistachio variety and am not one to like some of the “crazy” flavors. After sampling them I was really digging the coffee and the strawberry ones. I kept passing up the peanut butter and jelly, cause you know, I was sure it wasn’t going to be good. And then when I finally had it, I was blown away! I guess I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but the subtle peanut butter and slightly sweet filling made this one my favorite of the bunch. Who would have thought? Not me! I think you will be shocked at how much you like the peanut butter and jelly macaron when you try it. Check it out and let me know.

So, there you have it. Some of my favorite macarons I’ve discovered so far. I’m not saying I’ve tried all of them, but from what I have had, these are three of the best brands! What are some of your favorites from around the world?

The Best Spa Treatment I Have Ever Had

India will always be the Motherland to me. Even though I was born and brought up in the US, the Indian culture, traditions and heritage will always instill a certain sense of “home”. It really is the fabric of my being and I am constantly in awe as I learn more and more about the rich history and traditional customs of my homeland.

My dream of visiting an Ayurvedic retreat came true during a vacation to the beautiful state of Kerala in southern India. To be honest, I didn’t know much about the ancient traditions and concepts relating to the practice and theory of Ayurveda, but I was excited to become more knowledgeable and experience all that I could.

The Chopra Center defines Ayurveda as:  “More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.”

The treatments I received during my trip to Kerala included various forms of massage and acupressure with specific Ayurvedic oils aimed at creating a peaceful mind with relaxation and eliminating toxins from the body. It was definitely unique from any massage or spa treatment I had in the US and I felt a different sense of rejuvenation after the experience.  I remember thinking it would be nice to have these kind of treatment options at home in Chicago.

Fast forward to today and my wishes have come true! As it turns out, The Peninsula Spa is introducing a new line of Vedic Aromatherapy treatments called Sattva by Simply Peninsula. Sattva uses traditional techniques and benefits of Ayurveda but is combined with the added benefits of Aromatherapy and Marma techniques to provide a truly amazing experience. Created in collaboration with Subtle Energies out of Australia, Sattva treatments use rare and unique vedic essential and base oils, providing a holistic sensory experience.

I had the opportunity to try the new ‘Vedic Aromatherapy Full Body and Facial Marma Massage’ at The Peninsula Spa Chicago and I simply can not rave enough about it. Here’s the description of the treatment I received:

The treatment begins with a Vedic foot ritual, inducing calm and balance, followed by a full body Marma massage incorporating warm Vedic Aromatherapy oils, Ayurveda strokes, therapeutic and lymphatic techniques, Marma therapy to boost the immune system, strengthen muscles and joints and balance the body’s prana (chi). The Kasa bowl technique assists in drawing out toxins and excessive heat from the body, whilst the heavenly facial Marma massage enhances the anti-aging benefits of this treatment.

How unbelievable does that sound? I am here to tell you it was hands-down the BEST spa treatment I have ever had in my life. Ever.

I left feeling something I don’t think I have ever felt before; a true sense of feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated at the same time (and on a whole new level from what I experienced in Kerala). Is that what zen feels like? Whatever you want to call it, I was wishing I could bottle up that sensation and hold on to it forever.

Not only that, the specialty line of Sattva oils used for this experience had the most luxurious scents and are some of the highest quality oils created from products of India (such as tulasi, Indian lime and rose to name a few). The oils did more than make my skin glow and feel softer than ever; the scents truly took me on a journey back to India and had me feeling that sense of “home” again. How amazing to have that experience and nostalgia without having to travel all the way back to the Motherland?!

Sitting In Saigon, Dreaming Of New York City

Beautiful Architecture of Saigon

Beautiful Architecture of Saigon

You might think that while I have been to Vietnam, the best vegetarian banh mi sandwich I’ve ever had would have been there. Right??? Wrong!!!

Truth be told, I sought out what was reviewed as the best vegetarian banh mi sandwich in all of Saigon and was beyond disappointed. Let’s go as far as saying that I showed up absolutely starving at the restaurant, hated the sandwich so much that I picked out all of the fillings and basically ate plain bread with tomato and lettuce on it. That’s how hungry I was….and disappointed.

The sandwich I had in Saigon wasn’t even close to the real thing (well, the absolute real version is served with pork, but the real vegetarian concotion should have tofu, cucumbers, carrots, daikon, cilantro, jalapenos and mayo on a French baguette). The one I had in Saigon used some kind of soy product for what looked like fake meat slices, but even so, none of the other real and expected toppings were on there. Continue reading

NYC - Times Square

Being A Tourist On A Double Decker Bus In NYC – Times Square

A one week vacation in NYC this summer and I literally loved every single second of it. I had a very difficult time coming back from this trip for some reason. Not sure if it was because I had a ton of fun seeing friends and family and doing whatever I wanted or the fact that NYC is a vegetarian food haven and there are way too many options. Who knows, but I was really sad to come home this time. In the end, it was probably for the best, especially for my credit card (and not to mention my stomach…eating out every meal for a week can be a bit much)! Continue reading

Let Me See That Kati Roll

This is how the story always goes. Chicago O’hare International Airport —> New York Laguardia Airport —> The Kati Roll Company. No matter what time of the day or night I arrive at Laguardia (and we all know how timely those flights between Chicago and New York are…NOT) it is without fail that I head straight from the airport directly to The Village for my favorite New York treat, kati roll. And when I say anytime, I literally mean it… I have been there at 12pm or 4am and everything in between.

The Kati Roll Company - NYC

Now, when I say I, I mean we. I am only able to uphold this ridiculous ritual because of my dear brother Niral. He not only is an amazing brother who always picks me up from Laguardia, but he doesn’t even need to ask; it is an unstated understanding we have as siblings who share a common love for kati roll and just go directly to this hole in the wall from the airport. I am one lucky sister that is for sure!

A kati roll, is basically like an Indian burrito. There are all different choices of fillings from marinated paneer (cheese cubes), to spiced potatoes to chicken, lamb, shrimp etc which are wrapped up burrito style in a chapatti (like a whole wheat tortilla). I think there may be a chutney (sauce) inside as well. Quite honestly, for as many times as I have had kati roll, I’ve never bothered to open it up and see what was actually on the inside. I’m usually on cloud 9 of happiness that I just polish the thing off and relish in the joy of one of my favorite things.

One Paneer Kati Roll

One Paneer Kati Roll

I have only tried one type of kati roll which is a good and bad thing. Good, because I know exactly what I want each time. Bad, because I don’t think I will ever venture out and try something new (how devastating to try something new on my one chance there, not like it and then regret not getting what I love). The best one and my fav is the Achari Paneer Roll. It is paneer that has been marinated in Indian spices and  grilled, along with grilled onions and green peppers. Some additional chutney is added before it is rolled up in the chapatti. You can get it extra spicy with fresh jalepenos, but the one time I did this my lips were literally burning all night, so I haven’t ventured to try that again!

The kati roll is served warm and definitely is best eaten before you leave the small, cramped little dive. A few times my brother and I have picked the kati rolls up and brought them home to eat and they definitely weren’t as tasty as when you eat them right away.

Here’s a funny side note to clarify how amazing I think NYC’s kati rolls are. I was visiting Bombay about a year ago when we stumbled on an awesome restaurant called Swati Snacks (see future blog post). Now recognize that Bombay has an unbelievable culinary scene and is probably the birthplace of the kati roll. I was ecstatic when I saw kati roll on the menu at Swati Snacks and ordered one. It was going to be my very first chance to actually have something to compare the NYC version to (since I haven’t come across kati rolls anywhere else in the US). While I was eating the Bombay kati roll, I remember specifically telling my mom, “This is really good, but I actually think the one in NYC is better. Wait, WHAT???  I can’t believe I just said that either. I must be crazy to make a statement like that!!!”

So, there you have it. You don’t need to go all the way to Bombay to have the best kati roll ever….NYC it is!!
